The U.S. job market slowed down in June, falling far short of expectations, according to data released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

American employers added just 57,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate ticked slightly down to 4.2 percent. Economists expected the U.S. to add roughly 110,000 jobs and for the jobless rate to stay stable at 4.3 percent, according to consensus estimates.

The disappointing jobs numbers, released shortly before the July 4 holiday weekend, are the latest batch of concerning economic data.

Inflation rose to its highest annual rate in more than three years in May driven largely by energy price shocks created by the Iran war, according to federal data released last week.

Slowing job growth is emerging as another economic hurdle for President Trump and Republicans to clear ahead of the midterm elections.
