Two people have been killed in a violent incident at a school in the town of Gosen-Neu Zittau near Berlin.

One of the dead is an 18-year-old secondary school student and the other victim is a 30-year-old man who died when he tried to intervene, local media reported.

A male suspect has been arrested. It is not yet known if he was a student at the private Docemus school.

Brandenburg police said on social media they had detained him "following an act of violence," and that they were securing the crime scene.

He is reportedly 19 years old and is believed to be the ex-boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim, Maz Online reported.

The school's managing director Michael Kunz said classes will be cancelled on Friday.

"Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot and will not provide any information regarding the specific circumstances and sequence of events at this time," he told local media.

Although there will be no regular classes, Kunz said the school will remain open for all students who wish to come.

"We want to provide them with a safe space where they can come together, talk to each other, and process what has happened," he said.

A "very careful" decision will be made in coming days about how school life will be structured, he added.

Last month in a separate attack, two girls were seriously wounded and a 16-year-old suspect arrested at a secondary school in southern Germany.
