President Trump on Sunday blasted Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic nominee for mayor of Washington, D.C., as a “communist” whose policies will harm the district.

“Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things,’” the president wrote on Truth Social

Lewis George, a member of the D.C. Council representing Ward 4, won the Democratic primary in the race to succeed outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser (D). Bowser is retiring after three terms in office, while Lewis George is the favorite in heavily-liberal D.C. — Republicans do not even have a mayoral nominee.

A self-described democratic socialist, Lewis George has campaigned on expanding access to childcare, reforming zoning and permitting laws to speed up the construction of homes and addressing the root causes of crime — particularly among young people.

She has also pledged to bar the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement personnel. Interim MPD Chief Jeffery Carroll said in January his department is not working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but he noted D.C. officers work with other federal agencies that enforce immigration laws.

Prior to her primary victory, the president threatened a federal takeover of the district if Lewis George became the Democratic nominee. National Guard troops from multiple states have been in D.C. since August, in an effort by the Trump administration to crack down on crime.

Trump, who has also prioritized multiple projects intended to “beautify” the nation’s capital, said Sunday that Lewis George’s policies “will never work out” and he will not allow her to “even have a chance because [he has] worked too hard” on those endeavors.

The president also said he will meet with Lewis George. The Hill has reached out to Lewis George’s campaign for comment.

Trump added, “Many people, including myself, have worked long and hard to get it there, and we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, MAKE WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!”

Later Sunday, the president called communism “the Greatest Threat to our Country since World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or 9/11!”

Trump and Republicans have criticized communist policies in the wake of a trio of progressive candidates winning Democratic House primaries in New York City. He has also falsely referred to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), a democratic socialist who backed all three candidates, as a communist.
