President Trump issued a stark warning to Iran Sunday after Vice President Vance arrived in Switzerland for nuclear talks.
“Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Sunday morning. “If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!”
Renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has tested the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Iran, even delaying Sunday’s talks in Switzerland, which were originally scheduled for Friday.
The ceasefire in Lebanon has become a key point of contention, with Iran making it a priority condiction amid peace talks.
Vance, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir outside Lucerne Sunday. Pakistan has served as a key mediator amid the war in the Middle East.
On Saturday, Iranian officials signaled they would close the Strait of Hormuz over the strikes in Lebanon, arguing it violated the ceasefire agreement.
This agreement, which was finalized Wednesday, reopened the key waterway through which about a quarter of the world’s oil travels. The MOU also gives Washington and Tehran 60 days to negotiate Iran’s nuclear program and immediately waives U.S. sanctions on “Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and derivatives, and all associated services.”
Trump on Saturday, however, threatened to impose tolls in the strait if the U.S. and Iran fail to make a deal within 60 days.
“We may take over the Strait, if we have to,” President Trump told Fox News on Sunday. “I’ll blow the s— out of them.”
“If they don’t make a deal, we’ll collect tolls,” he told Fox News’s Trey Yingst.
Yet, Lebanon is still top of mind for officials in Europe amid nuclear discussions.
“We’re all working towards regional peace,” Vance told reporters Sunday. “There, of course, are going to be sometimes disagreements about precisely how to get there, but I actually feel pretty great about where we are in Lebanon.”
“There’s still some additional wood to chop, but we’re going to keep on working at it,” he added.
