President Trump on Friday threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on any country that implements a digital services tax on American technology companies.

He pointed to Europe, where he said countries have “been discussing the imminent implementation” or are “close to actually” putting such taxes in place. Digital services taxes are fees levied on tech firms by countries where their products are used.

“Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“This TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not,” he continued. “Additionally, the 100% TARIFF will be immediately imposed, if they proceed.”

Trump has previously taken aim at foreign taxes and fines on U.S. tech companies, like Meta, Amazon, Apple and Alphabet.

Earlier this month, he threatened to impose a 100 percent tax on French wines if France didn’t drop its tax on tech firms. The country currently has a 3 percent tax on revenues from digital services, online advertising and data collection.

“I asked him not to charge American companies, and if they do, I have no choice but to charge a 100 percent tariff on all champagnes and all wines coming out of France,” the president told the New York Post before heading to the Group of Seven summit in France last week.

He added that all French President Emmanuel Macron must do “is get rid of the sales tax, and he wouldn’t have that kind of pressure.”

Last August, Trump similarly threatened “substantial additional” tariffs on countries that impose digital taxes, legislation, rules or regulations, which he argued are “all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology.”

“America, and American Technology Companies, are neither the ‘piggy bank’ nor the ‘doormat’ of the World any longer,” he said at the time. “Show respect to America and our amazing Tech Companies or, consider the consequences!”

Canada notably reversed course on its digital services tax last year amid trade negotiations with the U.S. It rescinded the tax shortly before it was set to take effect last July, after the president suspended negotiations.

Trump has made tariffs a centerpiece of his economic policy, attempting to place wide-ranging import taxes on countries around the world. However, the Supreme Court ruled in February that the administration’s sweeping tariff initiative overstepped the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
