President Trump on Tuesday went after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D) attempt to tax second homes worth over $5 million.
Trump called the proposed “pied-à-terre” tax a “dangerous political ‘experiment'” in a Tuesday Truth Social post. The president’s comments came after a Staten Island, N.Y., judge temporarily halted the tax’s rollout, also ordering New York City to take down a public list of the over 900,000 homes to which it applied.
“The NYC Pied-a-Terre Tax is costing New York City and State a fortune in that the money, eventually to be gotten, is very little compared to to the TAXES PAID by the tens of thousands of people who are fleeing the City, never to return,” Trump wrote.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and Mamdani first proposed the pied-à-terre in April in an attempt to shrink the city’s around $12 billion budget gap. At the time, the mayor said the tax was directed at the “ultra-wealthy and global elites” who own property in the city.
“If you can afford a $5 million second home that sits empty most of the year, you can afford to contribute like every other New Yorker,” Hochul said in April.
The annual tax, as proposed, would specifically extend to one-to-three-family homes, condominiums and co-ops over $5 million owned by those with a primary residence outside of New York City.
Monday’s ruling regarding the tax, issued by Judge Wayne Ozzi — a Democrat on the state’s Supreme Court, was the result of a lawsuit a group of homeowners brought against Mamdani’s administration.
Along with the removal of the public pied-a-terre list, Ozzi barred the city from taking further action on letters it sent to roughly 17,000 property owners regarding the impending tax.
“This doesn’t work in America, and must be stopped, NOW! I am looking to see if the Federal Government has any legal right to avert this disaster, before it is too late, for the millions of people who cherish New York and want to see it thrive,” Trump added in his Tuesday post.
Mamdani’s office did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
