President Trump said Friday that Israel is pleased with the Board of Peace’s agreement with Hamas to disarm the militant group in Gaza, despite its apparent skepticism of the framework.
“We do have an understanding with Israel,” Trump told reporters at his Cabinet meeting at Camp David. “Israel is very happy about it. Israel helped us. They’ve been very good.”
“Most people said that would be a deal that would be undoable,” he continued. “Will it go through its ups and downs? It’s a very complex situation over there. The people are very complex [and] difficult. In many cases, wonderful. In many cases, not so wonderful.”
“It’s a great breakthrough. Nobody ever thought that would be possible to disarm Hamas,” the president said, calling it a “big step for the Middle East.”
“People are really impressed by it and they’re really surprised by it,” he said.
Trump announced the agreement Thursday.
Hamas said it will agree to disarm as long as Israel halts strikes and pulls out of Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has not issued a public response.
However, a U.S. official told reporters Thursday that Israel is skeptical that Hamas would follow through with the agreement.
“They’re very skeptical that Hamas will disarm. But again, they’re not really being asked to do much in the process because this isn’t really a trust deal. This is really, you know, it’s a conditions-based deal. And as things happen, that everyone has to follow the obligations they’ve taken,” the official said.
