President Trump on Saturday said the deaths of U.S. service members in Jordan is “a very sad thing.”

“We hate to see it happen. They were in service of our country. And they, every one of them will never allow, they’ll fight to the death. But never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said when asked about the deaths of the service members by NewsNation’s Hannah Brandt.

On Saturday, the U.S. military hit Iran with airstrikes, retaliating for Tehran striking two military bases in Jordan on Friday, where two service members were killed, per U.S. Central Command (Centcom).

The strikes started at 6 p.m. EDT, with U.S. officials saying they were an attempt to further degrade Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and “punish” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that launched missiles and drones against U.S. soldiers in Jordan the day before.

One service member was reported as missing beyond the two that were killed in Jordan, per Centcom. The U.S. military death toll in the Iran war is now at 16.

“Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday.

The war with Iran is reaching the five-month mark, and the conflict has stressed the global economy and caused oil and gas prices to rise. Americans have also expressed their distaste for the fighting in recent polling, wanting to see it stop.

A senior Iranian adviser threatened on Friday to begin an expanded war in the region in the wake of days-long intense fighting, warning that “full-scale offensive operations” could start up again if strikes from the U.S. did not stop.
