President Trump named Will Scharf as his new White House counsel on Sunday, a shakeup in the key legal role.
Scharf will assume the role on Sept. 1 and replace David Warrington, who has served since Trump’s inauguration and is headed to the private sector, the president announced on Truth Social.
“Will is Tough, Strong, and Smart! He also loves our Country, and respects the Law. Will Scharf will do a great job as White House Counsel!” Trump wrote.
Scharf, a conservative attorney, currently serves as White House staff secretary, where he manages the flow of paper to the president’s desk and has garnered public attention as the person who hands Trump executive orders in the Oval Office to sign.
Beyond the White House, Scharf has played a key role in advancing Trump’s agenda by serving as chair of a planning commission tasked with approving many of the president’s real estate projects around the nation’s capital.
Scharf had entered Trump’s orbit before his second White House term as one of his personal appellate attorneys. Scharf was part of the team that convinced the Supreme Court that Trump enjoys broad criminal immunity as a former president, and he had also defended Trump against writer E. Jean Carroll’s civil claims on appeal.
He joined the administration after launching a failed primary challenge in 2024 to Missouri’s then-attorney general.
A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Scharf previously worked on the confirmations of Trump’s two most recent Supreme Court picks, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. As White House counsel, Scharf is now poised to be at the center if another vacancy arises.
Trump in his announcement did not provide further details on why Warrington is leaving beyond announcing that he is “going on to the Private Sector.”
In his post, the president said Warrington has done a “truly outstanding job.”
