President Trump lashed out early Friday over Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) move to withhold his support for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination due to Trump’s proposed “anti-weaponization” fund, writing that the senator did not object to it prior to the president’s endorsement of Cornyn’s primary opponent.
“John Cornyn never had a problem with the so called ‘Fund,’ which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas, who easily won the Nomination for the United States Senate. Perhaps there has never been a group of people treated so badly in our Nation’s history,” Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post on Friday.
Cornyn and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) are holding out on supporting Blanche’s nomination as attorney general unless the Justice Department provides assurances that the proposed $1.776 billion legal defense fund for victims of the its “weaponization” during the Biden era is permanently dead and that Trump cannot exempt his family from tax audits.
The Texas senator told reporters on Thursday that the department did not provide adequate clarity in writing on closing a legal loophole that could bring back the fund.
“I think I am prepared to vote no, but I do think I owe it to my constituents and to Mr. Blanche to try to negotiate in good faith,” Cornyn told reporters. “And that’s what we’ve been doing. And so we’ll see where things are this morning and see where we go from here.”
Tillis and Cornyn’s decision to withhold their support for Blanche has put his nomination in jeopardy. Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) cancelled a vote to advance the nomination that was scheduled for Thursday morning.
Cornyn and Tillis, along with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), have become thorns in Trump’s side in what has been dubbed the “YOLO caucus.” Cornyn lost his reelection bid after Trump endorsed his Republican primary challenger, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Cassidy also lost his reelection bid to a Trump-backed GOP primary challenger while Tillis is not running for reelection.
