President Trump cheered late Tuesday, after Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) lost his House primary to former New York City comptroller Brad Lander (D).
“Weak and pathetic Congressman Dan Goldman just lost, BIG!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I guess people didn’t like him illegally targeting President TRUMP.”
He added, “In any event, this jerk is finally GONE!”
Goldman, a former federal prosecutor, was the lead majority counsel in House Democrats’ first impeachment inquiry against the president in 2019. The House impeached Trump, making him the third president with that distinction — the lower chamber impeached him for a second time after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Goldman has represented New York’s 10th Congressional District since 2023. But on Tuesday, he lost the primary race by more than 30 points.
Lander, with support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), attacked the incumbent from the left. The former comptroller particularly criticized him for his support for Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Both Lander and Goldman are Jewish.
After his defeat, the lawmaker told reporters he hopes Democrats “unify” around opposing Trump instead of engaging in intra-party squabbles.
“Almost all of the problems are really coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. … The more internal division and divisiveness, internal fighting, that we have means that [Republicans are] going to continue to push forward with their agenda, which is devastating to American families,” Goldman said, according to Spectrum News NY1.
Lander, meanwhile, said Tuesday that voters in the district “sent a resounding message: That you want leadership ready to fight, not fold, against authoritarianism.”
On Wednesday, Trump said he felt “sorry” for Goldman while calling him a “major Slimeball.”
The president added on Truth Social, “He is wandering aimlessly, together with the former husband of the great Kellyanne Conway, through a large field of Dumocrat Communists, trying so hard to find his way,” referring to George Conway, who finished in a distant fifth in the Democratic primary in New York’s 12th Congressional District.
Trump later wrote Goldman’s defeat was a “very sad finish for a man who has no clue, and never did!!!”
