President Trump announced early Thursday Apple will partner with semiconductor manufacturer Intel to design and produce chips in America as the White House pushes to reshore manufacturing to the U.S.
Trump, in an overnight Truth Social post, said U.S. companies “design everything” but “need to build it here,” including the production of semiconductor chips used to power artificial intelligence systems.
“Stupid Presidents took our Economy for granted, and let Taiwan and others steal our Semiconductor Factories. They forgot to protect our Industries with TARIFFS,” Trump wrote, adding it was clear by his second term “America needed its Semiconductor Industry to come back to the U.S.A
Apple has largely used Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, known as TSMC, to produce its chips, but the Intel partnership will allow the iPhone maker to expand its options.
Trump’s post comes after Intel agreed last year to give the government a 10 percent stake in the company, which now has a market value over $600 billion.
Apple announced an additional $600 billion investment into manufacturing in the U.S. last year to increase its domestic production.
Trump’s various tariffs on overseas production have forced various technology companies to rethink their domestic production. Trump took credit for Nvidia’s $5 million investment into Intel last year to design and manufacture chips, along with Intel’s recent partnership with Elon Musk’s Terafab AI chip complex project with SpaceX and Tesla.
Intel’s stock rose 9 percent in premarket trading on Thursday following Trump’s announcement.
Apple declined to comment on the partnership and The Hill reached out to Intel for additional comment.
