President Trump on Tuesday announced a Republican “midterm convention” in Dallas later this year.

“BIG NEWS! For the first time ever, the Republican Party will hold a MIDTERM CONVENTION. It will be in Dallas, Texas — One of my favorite places in the World. It will be fantastic! It has never been done before, and will be a truly Historic Event,” Trump said in a Tuesday evening Truth Social post.

“We are going to celebrate the GREAT AMERICAN COMEBACK, and the incredible successes of the American People who transformed our Country through the America First Agenda,” he added.

Late last month, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Joe Gruters said the party would have a midterm convention “before the general election,” as outlined by the president last year.

“There’s a very short window of doing it after the last primary ballots have been cast and before the general election. But yes, we’re very much moving forward with it,” Gruters said of the midterm convention during an appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.”

“We are still trying to finalize the details. At the last Republican National Committee meeting, they gave me the authority to put this together and we’re going to do that,” he added.

Trump’s comments come as November’s midterms, which may be a rocky road for the president and his party, inch ever closer. Some of the obstacles the GOP face as campaign season heats up include the unpopular war in Iran, concerns about the economy and Trump’s low approval ratings.

The president’s approval rating was sitting at 41.20 percent by later Tuesday, and his disapproval rating was at 56.50 percent, according to a polling average from Decision Desk HQ.
