TMZ founder Harvey Levin is sticking up for Dr. Anthony Fauci as the nation’s former top infectious disease expert was hit with attacks from Republicans during a contentious Senate hearing Wednesday.

“I have not used TMZ’s YouTube channel to vent personal feelings, but I am going to today,” Levin said in a video posted by the outlet just hours after Wednesday’s hearing concluded. “Watching Anthony Fauci before a congressional committee take the Fifth Amendment is just one of the most heartbreaking things I have seen in government.”

As he was peppered with questions from GOP senators about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) response to the coronavirus pandemic, vaccines and the disease’s origins, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights more than 100 times.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, has said he would seek to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress over his refusal to answer questions.

Republicans have sought to discredit Fauci and argued the policies he advocated for during the pandemic harmed millions of Americans.

“I have problems with the way CDC handled COVID,” Levin said. “They did damage to children and adults, and I don’t think they did it maliciously … they used their judgment and were overprotective … that being said, Anthony Fauci over decades has been an amazing public servant.”

Republicans seeking to punish Fauci are on a “witch hunt,” Levin argued, saying, “they want to throw him in prison, there is no other point to this hearing.”

TMZ has steadily grown its presence in Washington, D.C., this summer, deploying a number of producers and reporters to Capitol Hill and other locations around the nation’s capital to confront lawmakers and ask them probing questions.
