Three Americans have died in the Venezuela earthquakes, according to the State Department, as search-and-rescue and recovery efforts continue in the South American country.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed the deaths of three Americans resulting from the earthquakes to NewsNation’s Hannah Brandt on Monday. The department added that its consular team is in contact with the families of the deceased and providing assistance.

The State Department official also said it has received reports of approximately 12 Americans who may be missing following the quakes, which rocked Venezuela last week.

“We extend our deepest condolences to all the victims of the devastating earthquakes and their loved ones, and are committed to supporting the people of Venezuela during this difficult time,” the official added.

Jorge Rodríguez, the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, said Monday that 1,719 individuals have died due to the natural disasters, with 5,034 people injured and 12,402 people receiving medical attention.

The earthquakes impacted 855 buildings, with 189 suffering “total collapse,” according to Rodríguez.

More than 100 people recently deported from the U.S. to Venezuela are also missing after the earthquakes impacted their hotel in La Guaira, The Associated Press reported Monday.

An international coalition of governments has responded to the earthquakes, with Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez — who took over the country after U.S. forces captured her predecessor, Nicolás Maduro, in January — thanking a number of countries for sending aid workers and financial support to her country.

The State Department said Monday it has committed more than $300 million to response efforts in Venezuela, directing humanitarian funding to a “range of trusted international and non-governmental partners with proven capacity to deliver life-saving assistance quickly and effectively,” such as Samaritan’s Purse, Catholic Relief Services, UNICEF, the World Food Programme and the Red Cross.

U.S. Southern Command is also supporting relief efforts in Venezuela, with the command deploying numerous assets and personnel to the country. The U.S. military helped to repair the Simón Bolívar International airport in Caracas, Venezuela, for “international relief operations,” according to the State Department.

“Working alongside the interim Venezuelan authorities, the U.S. Air Force has deployed a specialized expeditionary airfield management team which is supporting tower and ground operations to help international humanitarian flights land safely, unload their cargo in an organized manner, and get critical supplies to the frontlines,” the State Department added.

The State Department is encouraging those with concerns about American loved ones to contact the department at 1-888-407-4747 from the U.S. or Canada and, +1-202-501-4444 from all other countries.
