The special relationship has a habit of survival — but no assurance of it 

Despite recent tensions, the U.K. and U.S. have maintained a special relationship for over 80 years due to their strategic utility, but for the relationship to endure, the U.K. must become more powerful on its own terms with a stronger defense, diplomatic and development strategy.
