The emergency department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center will undergo a staffing change between seasons of The Pitt.

Supriya Ganesh, who has played Dr. Samira Mohan in the first two seasons of the HBO Max hit, is departing the show. Meanwhile, Ayesha Harris, who recurs as night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular for The Pitt’s third season.

Ganesh’s exit from the series is said to be a story decision — the fictional PTMC is a teaching hospital, and staff turnover is common at such facilities in real life. Ganesh’s character has also spent a good amount of time this season pondering the next steps in her medical career after her plans to move back to her home state of New Jersey were disrupted. Her departure follows that of Tracy Ifeachor’s Dr. Heather Collins after season one.

Ganesh — who considered applying to medical school before being cast on The Pitt — has also appeared in Grown-ish, Billions and Chicago Med.

Harris has appeared in several episodes of The Pitt’s first two seasons as Dr. Ellis, a senior resident on PTMC’s night shift. Her credits also include Daisy Jones & The Six, Netflix’s Glamorous and episodes of Abbott Elementary and This Is Us. She is repped by Innovative Artists, MRK MGMT and Goodman Genow.

The Pitt, the reigning Emmy winner for best drama series, is set to finish its second season on April 16.
