The Las Vegas Raiders made it official last week, selecting quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Mendoza’s selection was almost a sure thing, especially after the six-foot-five redshirt junior helped the Indiana University Hoosiers to the national championship title in January, earning Heisman Trophy honors along the way. Now, the 22-year-old Miami native is headed to Sin City, where he hopes to help reverse the fortunes of a football team that has not won a Super Bowl in more than four decades.

Mendoza’s official Raiders jersey was unveiled last week, and the new quarterback is expected to wear his college number, 15. The Raiders say the QB received the official blessing from the team’s Hall of Fame coach Tom Flores, who wore the number 15 during his tenure as QB with the team in the Sixties.

Now headed to Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, the quarterback will be tasked with helping a lowly Las Vegas team looking for a return to the NFL’s big game. The last time the Raiders made the Super Bowl was back in 2002 — a year before Mendoza was born.
