THE FAMILY STONE ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection The beloved comedy-drama The Family Stone will receive a sequel 20 years later, with many of its original stars — Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, and more — set to return for The Families Stone.
Searchlight Pictures officially announced the sequel to the 2005 film — which has become a holiday classic over the past two decades — on Saturday, while also confirming that Family Stone co-stars Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, and Paul Schneider would reprise their roles, Variety reports.
“It’s a comedy with a dash of tragedy — the kind of thing that usually makes me puke,” Peter Travers wrote in his Rolling Stone review of the film in 2005. “But I fell for this one.”
The Family Stone also starred Diane Keaton, whose matriarch character Sybil dies at the end of the original. According to the sequel’s synopsis, “Twenty years after their mother’s passing, the Stone family reunites for Christmas only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.”
