The best speakers for record players are also easy to plug-and-play, so you don’t need to think about watts and ohms (though you’re free to go down that rabbit hole if you’d prefer).

What to Consider When Buying Speakers for Record Players

Here’s what to look for and consider when buying speakers for your record player.

Amplification: Many modern entry-level and midrange turntables have a built-in preamplifier, which allows you to connect them directly to any set of powered speakers with an RCA input. If your record player doesn’t have one, you’ll need to pick up a separate phono preamp, or choose a speaker system that has a phono preamp built into it.

Size: Speakers can get very large, but we’ve stuck to recommending either a pair of bookshelf speakers or a single speaker with multiple drivers. You’ll be able to fit these speakers on a reasonably-sized desk or turntable stand.

Additional Functionality: We’re only recommending powered speakers that have multiple inputs, which means you can also connect them to additional AV equipment. If your turntable is set up near your TV, for example, you can pick up a set of speakers that can stay connected to both at once, so they’re useful whether you’re listening to music or enjoying TV shows and movies.

How We Tested the Best Speakers for Record Players

I tested the best speakers for record players by hooking them up to a record player and listening to albums from several different genres. When possible, I also streamed audio to them over Bluetooth to assess how they sounded when listening to digital music. Most tests were conducted using a Fluance RT85N turntable equipped with a Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge (with a WiiM Ultra Music Streamer as a preamp if necessary), and a Victrola Onyx turntable fitted with an Audio Technica AT-VM95E cartridge.

Fluance Ri71 Reference Stereo Powered Bookshelf Speakers

Fluance’s Ri71 are among the best-sounding speakers (under $500) that I’ve heard in years, and they’re an excellent choice to pair with a turntable. The speakers’ built-in EQ was very balanced, so there was never too much bass, midrange, or treble, regardless of what I was playing. There’s always going to be some hum and hiss between tracks when you listen to vinyl at high volumes, but I didn’t hear any unexpected or unwanted distortion in these quieter moments, or when listening to acoustic music. The Ri71 takes up more space than my other recommendations, but you get excellent sound and a wide soundstage that make the footprint worth it. Outside of their ability to handle vinyl, the Ri71 speakers are among our favorite bookshelf and home theater speakers on the market.

Andover Audio SpinBase 2

Using a speaker that sits beneath your turntable shouldn’t work, but Andover Audio figured it out with this SpinBase 2. The unit delivers well-balanced audio without shaking the record player so much that it affects the sound quality. It has a built-in phono preamp, so you can use it with any turntable without additional equipment, and a built-in ground to reduce humming. Its four-driver audio system sounds great, and you can even adjust its bass and treble to suit your tastes. One nice touch is that it also has a headphone jack if you’d like to enjoy your LPs at full volume while other people are sleeping. Andover offers a larger model with even more speakers called the SpinBase Max 2, which is available for $549.

Marshall Woburn III

Marshall makes some of the most iconic music gear of all time, and its Woburn III speaker is a great speaker for record players. The single speaker looks like an amp and has physical knobs for controlling its volume, bass, and treble. I liked how the Woburn III sounded out of the box, but it’s nice to have those controls on hand to suit your personal preference. Though it’s a single speaker, the Woburn III is pretty large and can get extremely loud. Music still sounded clean (in a good way) at high volumes, but I wouldn’t expect to keep it cranked all the way up very often. While it’s synonymous with rock, the Woburn III did just as well listening to jazz or pop albums.

Sonos Era 300

If you want a smart speaker that’s also compatible with your turntable, Sonos’ Era 300 is your best choice. You’ll need a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter to connect it to your turntable unless your record player has Bluetooth built in, but the accessory is small and inexpensive. The Era 300 is the best smart speaker I’ve used, and it can play music on its own if you want to switch between analog and streaming. Sonos’ app makes it easy to adjust its EQ manually, and you have the option to use a feature called Trueplay to optimize its sound for your room. The Era 300 can play Dolby Atmos surround sound music with a convincing amount of depth thanks to its upward-firing drivers, so it’s a one-stop shop for all analog and digital music formats.

Edifier R1280DB

Edifier’s R1280DB is a fantastic set of budget-friendly speakers for record players. There wasn’t as much detail as you get from the other speakers above, but that was only obvious when I listened to music on different equipment back to back. The speakers have a built-in EQ knob, which makes it easy to make adjustments to their sound. Similarly, the included remote made it possible to change inputs and tweak the speakers’ volume from across the room. Nothing about the R1280DB screams budget, and they’re not the type of entry-level audio equipment you’ll immediately look to replace after a year or two. Plus, they have a stylish mid-century-inspired look that matches most retro record players. The R1280DB is also one of our favorite bookshelf speakers, overall.
