Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said Monday that his state will seek federal reimbursement for border security measures taken by the Lone Star State during the Biden administration.

“The Trump administration has now opened up the window for us to be able to file for reimbursement of the expenses that we incurred, and we’re seeking reimbursement as we speak, right now, of billions of dollars of costs that Texas incurred to secure the border and the failure of the Biden administration to do its job,” Abbott told NewsNation’s Ali Bradley in a Monday interview.

Under former President Biden, Texas intensely cracked down on immigration along its southern border with Mexico.

Abbott pushed constitutional boundaries on whether Texas or the federal government had jurisdiction over the border and immigration enforcement during Biden’s term. The governor’s legal team first publicly played around with the idea of formally declaring an “invasion” of the southwest border in April 2022.

At one point in February 2024, over 5,000 Texas National Guard troops were at the border alongside several hundred more guardsmen sent by other states with Republican governors.

Biden’s administration faced heat from the right for its handling of immigration, and President Trump in 2024 campaigned on using military force against drug cartels in Mexico, no matter the opinion of the Mexican government.

The Trump administration has taken a harsher stance on immigration compared to its predecessor, but the more aggressive moves have garnered their own backlash. Earlier this year, federal immigration authorities shot two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis, igniting a wave of fury toward the administration and the Department of Homeland Security, specifically the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
