Democrat Shannon Taylor is projected to face off against Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.) in a district that would have been a prime pick up for Democrats had their congressional map been implemented this spring, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Wittman faced no primary on Tuesday for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, while Taylor, Henrico County Commonwealth’s attorney, beat out 12 other Democrats.
Wittman has held the seat since 2007, and President Trump locked down the district in 2024 by close to a 5-point margin, according to DDHQ. But, November’s upcoming race between Taylor and Wittman may have looked different without the intervention of the Virginia Supreme Court a few months ago.
The high court voided a state referendum approving a new congressional map from Virginia Democrats that would have almost certainly flipped Wittman’s seat blue. Wittman applauded the court’s move at the time.
Taylor faces an uphill battle in November, according to election handicapper Cook Political Report, which rates the race for the southern Virginian district as leaning Republican.
