NBC/SNL Saturday Night Live host Matt Damon was cast as the adoring husband in Mom, an entirely inoffensive movie where nothing bad happens—something that mothers everywhere will enjoy.
Ahead of Mother’s Day, the movie’s trailer opens with an empty nester mom (Ashley Padilla) in a big house being visited by her three adult children who have an announcement she loves to hear: they’re all moving back in.
The movie is “completely devoid of conflict, suspense and dramatic tension,” the trailer’s voiceover says. For instance, when a daughter gets worried that a big pickleball tournament is happening at the same time as her baby shower, mom isn’t concerned all.
“They’re on different days,” she says, sipping coffee unbothered.
The voiceover continues: “Moms are the hardest-working people in the world. They deserve a movie where the house is clean, the kids are home, and the husband is straight up Matt Damon.”
“I just love being married to you, Matt Damon,” mom says.
“I feel the same way, Rhonda. Rhonda Damon,” he replies. “You want to go upstairs?”
“To make love?” she asks.
“No—to do a fashion show with everything in your closet!” he says as she lights up.
Later in the bedroom, mom’s decision to “slip into something more comfortable” means just removing cutaway patches of fabric on her shoulders, which is plenty for her husband.
Another scene from Mom is when her kids needed their birth certificates—and she had them all.
“And rest assured,” the trailer voiceover adds, “if something bad happens, it will be to someone you don’t like.” In this case, someone named Judith is sick—but it’s the same Judith who called mom’s porch pillows ugly, so she smiles and forgets it.
