During an arraignment on Wednesday, magistrate Judge Juana Lombard issued LaBeouf a six-month suspended sentence with two years’ probation. He must also receive rehabilitation for alcohol abuse, sensitivity training and anger management classes.
The actor was charged with three counts of battery for fighting two men involved in ejecting him from a bar, where he was allegedly causing a disturbance and displaying violent aggression. One of the alleged victims later characterized the confrontation as a hate crime because he was called a homophobic slur, though the court declined to add additional charges.
In a statement, Sarah Chervinksy, a lawyer for LaBeouf, said the incident was “nothing more than a minor Mardi Gras bar tussle.”
“There is no evidence it was about bias or prejudice, which is why the state only charged these low-level misdemeanors,” she added. “Mr. LaBeouf came to court today wanting to take accountability for his part in what happened, and he has done so. Now he’s looking forward to focusing on family, work, and new creative projects.”
The headline-splashing arrest came after LaBeouf claimed to be sober, blaming past abusive behavior on alcoholism. The incident took place 15 minutes after midnight at R Bar in the city’s Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. It involved LaBeouf striking a man involved in removing him from the bar with closed fists. He later returned to the building acting more aggressively as a small crowd gathered and looked on. After several onlookers held him down, LaBeouf allegedly resumed hitting the same person whom he’d punched earlier and then hit another person in the nose.
The actor appears to now reside in New Orleans, where he recently relocated after his reported split with Mia Goth.
