The update was confirmed on Friday as the third part of Guthrie’s interview with her colleague Hoda Kotb aired, in which the co-anchor spoke about why she is coming back as the search for her elderly mother, Nancy, continues.
It will mark her first in-studio appearance on the show since Jan. 30, two days before her mother was reported missing from her Arizona home.
“When times are hard, you want to be with your family. And I want to be with my family,” said Guthrie about her colleagues. “And so I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try… I’m not going to be the same,” she added. “But maybe it’s like that old poem: ‘More beautiful in the broken places.'”

Guthrie’s first interview since her mother’s disappearance nearly two months ago aired yesterday. The TV host told Kotb she believes there is a good chance Nancy was taken as a way “to make a quick buck” because of her own fame and wealth.
She also went into more depth about how her family discovered Nancy was missing. On Feb. 1, Savannah Guthrie’s sister Annie Guthrie called her in a panic. Nancy Guthrie, 84 and pretty immobile, was missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home. Her back doors were open and Nancy’s cellphone and purse were left behind — and then there was the blood on the porch and the forcibly removed doorbell camera.
It is not known as fact that this was a kidnapping for ransom. Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie was taken against her will, but have not arrested a suspect.
Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance became a global news story, and a main topic of discussion across the TV and true crime media ecosystem. Journalists, podcasters and digital creators who cover the true crime space traveled to Arizona and staked out many of the key properties, driving their own theories of the case.
As the days wore on without a break in the case, the Guthrie family began to make public appeals to the kidnapper, ultimately offering a $1 million family reward.
Inside NBC, the future of Savannah Guthrie’s role on the Today show became a topic of conversation, as people wondered how she would be able to return after such a challenging moment for her family. The company turned to Guthrie’s former co-anchor Kotb to help fill in day-to-day (Kotb stepped away from the show last year), with other members of the team filling in as needed.
Now that her return has been set, those questions have been put aside. Though the cheery day-to-day of Today may not ever feel quite the same.
