Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said he believes the Democratic Senate primary in Minnesota between Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan (D), a progressive, and Rep. Angie Craig (D), a moderate, will be “tight.”
“I think it’s going to be a tight race. I hope very much that Peggy wins. I think what we’re seeing in Minnesota, Margaret, in Michigan, and all across this country, is that people understand that we’re living with an economy that is rigged. You have working families, 60 percent of our people, living paycheck-to-paycheck. People can’t afford groceries, housing, healthcare, basic necessities of life,” Sanders, who has endorsed Flanagan, told CBS News’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation.”
The Democratic Senate primary for Minnesota this week comes amid a broader clash among Democrats over the party’s future, with those on the left wanting to pull the party in their direction and centrists warning of doing just that.
Craig has received endorsements from former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Flanagan has endorsements from Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.).
“Peggy Flanagan is about bringing about real change, standing up to the big money interests. There is a reason why the super PACs and the billionaires are flooding Minnesota with all kinds of money. Same thing as Michigan,” he said, referencing the recent Michigan Democratic Senate primary between progressive Abdul El-Sayed and moderate Rep. Haley Stevens.
Last week, El-Sayed won his race, a key victory in a primary season that has seen left-wing candidates rack-up victories over more establishment figures.
