Repairs are occurring at the White House’s North Portico, according to multiple Trump administration officials, adding it to the list renovation projects around Washington, D.C., that President Trump has undertaken.
The portico’s columns “are currently undergoing standard restoration work” and that stone in the columns was being repaired, a White House official has told NewsNation, The Hill’s sister network.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum explained repairs to the portico on Tuesday’s episode of Katie Miller’s podcast.
“You see the scaffolding on the North Portico right now?” he told Miller, the wife of White House aide Stephen Miller. “You know, President Trump comes out to greet a world leader, he sees door dings and the pillars and says, ‘Look at all this stuff, it needs to be repaired.’”
“Oh, is that what you’re doing?” Miller asked. “Fixing the dings and the pillars?”
“Yeah,” Burgum replied. “Everything, I mean, and it’s all historic renovation work.”
NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer on Thursday posted video of the portico covered by a tarp featuring a design on the outside with columns.
Throughout his second term, Trump has undertaken multiple renovation projects in D.C., from resealing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to knocking down the White House’s East Wing for a ballroom. Both projects have received backlash and faced legal obstacles.
