There has not been a single major industry event in the last three months where major producers and execs have not brought up the phenomenon of Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms” and Curry Barker’s “Obsession.” The two films, directed by 20-something-year-olds who came from YouTube, exploded all box-office expectations while ushering in droves of Gen Z audiences back to cinemas. As the industry rushes to try to understand how to capitalize on that momentum, Parsons is already looking ahead.
