Former President Obama is starting a new chapter as the host of a literature-focused podcast.
The ex-commander in chief will host “A Great Book,” Audible and Higher Ground Productions, the media company launched by the former president and Michelle Obama, announced on Monday.
Former President Obama will sit down “with six luminaries to discuss the books that have profoundly shaped his worldview and our society,” as part of the project, which premieres Sep. 24 on Audible, according to a news release.
“At a time when fewer people are able to sit down with a book, it’s important to remember the joy and power that can come from reading,” he said in a Monday post on the social platform X announcing the podcast.
“And some books don’t just tell a story — they change the way we see the world,” Obama said.
Over the course of six episodes, Obama will focus on books including “The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin, Marilynne Robinson’s “Gilead,” “Song of Solomon” by Toni Morrison and “All the Pretty Horses” by Cormac McCarthy.
For the series, Obama said he “invited some friends to explore why these books resonate, how they can shape our understanding of ourselves and each other, and why literature matters now more than ever.”
Audible and Higher Ground Productions announced a “worldwide, multi-project, multi-year first look” deal in 2022 that they said at the time would “reflect the companies’ shared mission to tell meaningful and entertaining stories that elevate diverse voices and experiences.”
The 65-year-old former president is a longtime bibliophile — since 2009, Obama has released a summer reading list featuring some of his favorite books.
