Stars Kristen Bell, Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons and Jackie Tohn joined co-showrunner Bruce Eric Kaplan for the FYC conversation in L.A. on Friday, alongside costume designer Negar Ali-Kline and music supervisor Manish Raval. Noticeably absent was Adam Brody, as the crowd was told he is currently in production on a project in the U.K.; ahead of season three, Brody declared his support for a free Palestine, which creator Erin Foster and co-star Tovah Feldshuh have both publicly disagreed with. Foster and co-showrunner Jenni Konner were also not present at the event.

The conversation began with a mention of the season four renewal, as Bell told the room, “I know a couple things which are really exciting, but I’m just excited to read the drafts.” Simons added that after Bell and Brody’s characters had a surprise wedding to end season three, “I personally am really excited to see the families’ reaction to that because it was very romantic, them getting married like on a lark at the ocean.”
Much of the chat, though, was dedicated to the episode where Simons’ character Sasha and Lupe’s character Morgan go to New York and finally act on their seasons-long chemistry. Simons said the pair was “very flattered and very excited” that they would get an episode just focusing on their characters, and “I do think that we approached it being like, for lack of a better term, ‘let’s not fuck this up.'”

Simons joked that with both he and Lupe being quite tall, “so much of us is limb and there are so many elbows,” causing them to be quite nervous about how to pull off a rom-com-worthy kiss. Lupe teased, “Bruce, like we literally came up to you and were like, ‘You have to make us not look bad during this kiss. Choreograph the shit out of it; it has to be something like kind of cute.'”
It seems to have worked out, with the episode being a breakout moment from season three. Bell gave her full endorsement, saying, “The whole New York episode I think is one of the best episodes of television that has ever been made. I was standing up watching the cut” and “my body was aching for them to be together.”
Lupe interjected, “She was also live texting me and Tim about how hot Tim was.” Bell confirmed, “I was like, ‘You guys, Tim is a romantic lead.’ I said it, everyone’s gonna know it. We’re gonna need security on set next year. He’s the lead of the show now — somebody’s gotta tell Adam.”
