Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty after he was charged with murder in the killing of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

California prosecutors announced they will not seek capital punishment against the 33-year-old, who faces two counts of first-degree murder and an added allegation of lying in wait. He has pleaded not guilty.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said before a court hearing on Tuesday that the DA’s office has “spoken to the victim’s family, we have spoken to prosecutors, law enforcement, and have worked with the most senior people in the district attorney’s office” to examine the “aggravating factors as well as the mitigating factors.”

“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” Hochman said. “That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.”
