Prime Video‘s upcoming series Sex Criminals has found a director.

Nia DaCosta (Hedda, Candyman) will helm the first two episodes of the series from creators Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon and Tze Chun. DaCosta will also be an executive producer of the series, the Amazon-owned streamer announced ahead of its upfront presentation Monday.

Sex Criminals is the second TV project DaCosta has signed on to in recent weeks. She’s also executive producing and has story credit (with Ozark’s Bill Dubuque) on Hulu’s pilot Southern Bastards.

Prime Video gave a series order to Sex Criminals in January. Based on an acclaimed Image Comics title by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, the series will star Imogen Poots (Hedda, Outer Range) and John Reynolds (Search Party, Stranger Things); Nanjiani will also have an on-screen role.

The show’s description reads, “Suze (Poots) is a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night, she meets Jon (Reynolds), who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex having, time stopping couple would do: they rob banks.”

Amazon MGM Studios is producing Sex Criminals. Nanjiani and Gordon executive produce via their Winter Coat Films. Chun also exec produces, as do Winter Coat’s Dani Melia, Dani Gorin of LuckyChap, Fraction, Zdarsky and DaCosta. LuckyChap’s Louie Hayes is a producer.

Along with 2021’s Candyman and Hedda, DaCosta also co-wrote and directed The Marvels in 2023. She is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360, Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, Shelter PR, and Del Shaw.
