Netflix has bought Diego Luna‘s “Ashes” for Latin America, Spain and Portugal in the run up to its world premiere in the Special Screenings section at the Cannes Film Festival.

Adapted from the acclaimed novel “Ceniza en la boca,” “Ashes” follows Lucila, a young woman who leaves Mexico with her younger brother to reunite with their mother in Madrid after she emigrated years earlier in search of a better future. But upon arriving in Spain, Lucila is confronted with a harsh and suffocating reality far removed from the life she had imagined. Despite the disappointment, she remains determined to carve out a future for herself and her brother. Netflix will stream the film in Spanish-speaking territories, including Latin America, Spain and Portugal, in 2027 following its theatrical run.
