Neon Plans Art World Conversation Series for ’The Christophers’ Release

Neon Plans Art World Conversation Series for ’The Christophers’ Release

To promote the upcoming release of The Christophers, its art-focused drama from director Steven Soderbergh, Neon is planning a conversation series between the film’s creatives and members of the art community.

The series will take place at the Sotheby’s Breuer Building and the WSA in lower Manhattan, and will feature The Christophers stars and filmmakers, including Michaela Coel, Ian McKellen, writer Ed Solomon and Soderbergh, along with the likes of art critic Jerry Saltz and artist and educator Ajay Kurian.

Special screenings will follow these talks on April 14 and April 15 in Austin, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, DC. which will include discussions with local artists, art writers and experts.

The series will kick off on April 9 with “The Art of Making The Christophers,” a live conversation with the filmmakers and Andrew Goldstein, formerly the head of Artnet News, about the making of the film, and how they captured the life of working artists.

This will be followed by on April 10 “Canvas on the Silver Screen”, featuring three successive conversations, beginning with a one-on-one conversation between Saltz, the Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic at New York Magazine, and McKellen. Later on, Solomon will be in conversation with Kurian about the process of writing The Christopher, after which will be a panel, ‘Inside the Artist’s Studio: The Real Dynamics of the Artist–Assistant Relationship’, moderated by Kurian and featuring artists Jamian Juliano-Villani, Ian Cheng, and others.

The Christophers sees the estranged relatives (Jessica Gunning and James Corden) of a famous artist (McKellen) enlist the help of a struggling artist (Coel) to steal and complete the artist’s unfinished works. Neon acquired the film out of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Neon will release The Christophers in New York and Los Angeles on April 10, expanding nationwide on April 17. The full schedule of events can be found here.
