Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) on Monday said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) should be booted from the role, doubling down on his push to oust the nine-year Democratic leader.

When asked who should take over, Moulton said, “It should not be Chuck Schumer,” during a Monday night debate against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.).

Moulton is hoping to oust Markey, citing concerns over his age and ties to the Democratic establishment.

He’s raised similar concerns about Schumer but hasn’t shared who he thinks should step up to replace the Senate Democratic leader.

“I’ve made a promise that until I get there, I won’t say who I have in mind,” he added, referring to whether he wins the Democratic nomination in the Massachusetts Senate race.

The party primary is set to take place on Sept. 1.

In November, Moulton, alongside eight other Democratic lawmakers, sounded the alarm on Schumer after he relented and voted with Republicans to approve a stopgap measure to reopen the government after a record-long shutdown.

Schumer has previously said there was “no f‑‑‑ing way” party members would cave on demands related to since-expired Affordable Care Act premium subsidies to reopen the government.

After the vote, Moulton wrote, “Tonight is another example of why we need new leadership. If @ChuckSchumer were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare,” in a post on the social platform X.

“Maybe now @EdMarkey will finally join me in pledging not to vote for Schumer?”

Markey, who declined to endorse Schumer as party leader during the Monday debate, has maintained a polling edge over Moulton, despite consistent jabs from the lawmaker about his age and establishment ties.

“This is not about being critical of age, it’s about the fact that we need new ideas, a new playbook, because a 50-year-old playbook is just not delivering for our country, for Massachusetts,” Moulton said during the Monday night debate.

“We’ve got a second term of Donald Trump, and we need new plans, we need new leadership,” he added.

Markey has argued his background in politics allows him to be an effective changemaker, and polling shows likely voters agree.

“Experience is not the opposite of change. Experience is what you use in order to create change. That is what I have done,” Markey said at the debate.
