Most Americans say the war in Iran has not been worth the cost and has fallen short of its goals, according to a new poll.

In a Marquette Law School Supreme Court poll, 88 percent of respondents said the U.S. has “not achieved its goals” in the conflict against Iran, while 12 percent said it has. The poll also found that 75 percent described the fighting as “not worth the cost,” while 25 percent said it has been worth the cost.

The war in Iran just passed the five-month mark, with the conflict stressing the global economy, raising oil and gas prices, and straining historic U.S. alliances.

According to AAA, the average cost of a gallon of gas in the U.S. was at about $4.08 on Wednesday afternoon, up from about $3.16 a year ago.

Republicans have mostly backed President Trump’s handling of the war in Iran, but the fighting has threatened to become a political risk for the GOP in the lead-up to the midterm elections in the fall.

Last week, Fox News host Brian Kilmeade said Trump told him that the Iran war is “not that popular.”

“Basically, his word was, ‘[I am] surprised at the amount of progress made in the Oman talks,’ and he said, ‘I realize the war is not that popular, I also realize it’s necessary,’” Kilmeade said, referencing Oman’s mediator position in talks between the U.S. and Iran.

Trump warned Iran on Monday that it was their “last chance” to come to an agreement with the U.S. or face “decapitation.”

The Marquette Law poll took place from July 22-29, featuring 1,076 participants and a plus or minus of 3.2 percentage points as its margin of error.
