As elections for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District near, Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) is losing traction for his campaign amid allegations of abuse from his ex-wife, as his Democratic opponent pulls ahead in a new poll.
In a new co/efficient polling memo, Brook Park City Council member Democrat Brian Poindexter is now leading Miller by 14 points as opposed to a survey from last week that showed the margin between the candidates at 5 points.
The poll added that because of what voters have seen, read or heard about Miller, 48 percent are less likely to support him, with Republicans 37 percent less likely to support the GOP candidate.
Among Republicans, only 11 percent are more likely to support him, and of all voters, 9 percent are more likely to support him.
The rapid margin change is attributed to a public and ongoing battle between the congressman and his ex-wife Emily Moreno, daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio). Miller has repeatedly denied allegations from Moreno that he threw scalding hot water at her, pointed a gun at her head and broke their daughter’s collarbone.
The couple divorced in 2025, and have been locked in a custody battle over their daughter since.
Poindexter said in a phone interview on Wednesday with Politico that his campaign message has not changed, but agreed, “the allegations against Max Miller are very credible and very outrageous. … If they prove to be true, he should be in jail.”
In an interview with Jake Tapper, Miller insisted he will not drop from his reelection race despite facing scrutiny from many GOP members.
Axios reported that two sources said Republicans privately expect Miller to drop from the election by the end of the week.
“I believe Max would be making the right decision to step aside as a candidate and resign from Congress to focus on what is in the best interest of his daughter,” Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) said in a statement posted on social platform X.
The Ohio Secretary of State’s office election calendar lists Aug. 10 as the last day for a political party to be able to replace a candidate that withdraws.
The co/efficient poll was conducted Aug. 5-6 with 615 likely general election voters in the congressional district. The margin of error was 3.94 percentage points.
