Tom Cruise as Maverick in 'Top Gun.' Now that Tom Cruise has filmed the supposed final Mission: Impossible movie, the 63-year-old can now make more Top Gun movies. Paramount confirmed that a second sequel to the 1986 hit film was in the works, following up the 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. The film studio announced Top Gun 3 during its CinemaCon panel this week, according to The Guardian.
The newspaper reports that no other stars from the franchise have signed onto the sequel yet, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached. The Guardian noted that Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is not yet part of the project.
“We pitched Tom a story he liked,” Bruckheimer told People in 2024. “But he’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see.” In the interview, Bruckheimer said he admired Cruise because “he’s really engaged in every part of the process.”
