Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and director Travis Knight brought the power of Masters of the Universe to CinemaCon.

Amazon MGM Studios is set to release director Knight’s feature theatrically on June 5. Based on the popular Mattel toy line, the film stars Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms. Galitizine plays Adam Glenn, known as He-Man, the former Prince of Eternia who grew up on Earth.

“This is the sword of power — it’s ancient, mystical, very difficult to get through security,” Galitzine quipped to the crowd while holding a large sword. “I was told not to swing it, legally.”

Mendes teased that the film includes “so many muscles — more muscles than is necessary.” She added, “Strip all that away, and it’s about a kid that doesn’t feel that he’s enough.”

Knight explained, “Masters of the Universe is something that I seriously loved as a kid.”

The group then unveiled new footage from the film. The clip opens with Galitzine being teasingly called “Highlander” multiple times. Suddenly, he is confronted by Beast Man, leading Galitzine to ask, “What is going on?”

Thankfully, Teela emerges out of nowhere to save the day. “Adam, is it really you? You don’t recognize me?” she asks. “Ready to go home?”

The cast includes Morena Baccarin (playing the Sorceress), James Purefoy (King Randor), Alison Brie (Evil-Lyn), Sasheer Zamata (Suzie), Charlotte Riley (Queen Marlena), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Malcolm/Fisto), Sam C. Wilson (Trap Jaw), Jon Xue Zhang (Ram-Man), Hafthor Bjornsson (Goat Man) and Kojo Attah (Tri-Klops). Additionally, Kristen Wiig voices Roboto.

Mattel launched the Masters of the Universe franchise with a line of action figures that debuted in 1982. A year later, the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe premiered in syndication and was followed by video games and other merchandise.

After a lengthy development process, Masters of the Universe is finally set to hit the big screen with a script credited to Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and David Callaham. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner and DeVon Franklin serve as producers.

CinemaCon is the annual event for exhibitors and Hollywood studios that runs this year from April 13-16. It is the official convention of Cinema United.
