Former Sen. Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) on Sunday shut down the idea of possibly supporting a socialist candidate in comments that come amid a recent rise of democratic socialists on the national political stage.
During an appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” host Margaret Brennan asked about the possibility of backing a socialist candidate.
“No way, my God, no,” Manchin said.
“Even if they have some good ideas?” Brennan pressed.
“I’ll support the good ideas, but how could you support some of the crazy stuff they’re for? Have you seen their platform?” Manchin responded.
“They’re for dismantling everything that we know … whether it be the structure of government, Congress itself or the Senate, they want to get rid of. And then they start talking about all the crazy things: no police, no this, no this, no that,” he added. “Are you crazy?”
Manchin’s comments come as democratic socialist and left-leaning candidates notch wins in recent primaries, from the District of Columbia to California, New York and beyond. Within the last year, one of those primary winners, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), has become a superstar and one of the most talked-about members in his party.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), another prominent democratic socialist, has been discussed as a possible 2028 presidential contender.
