Former New York City comptroller Brad Lander is projected to win his Democratic primary challenge against incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman (D) in New York, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ)
He easily trounced the incumbent candidate, garnering almost 63 percent support with 47 percent of the total vote reported, per DDHQ.
Lander, who finished a distant third in the Big Apple’s primary for mayor last year, is now on a glidepath to win the blue seat this fall. His victory marks a key win for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who backed Lander.
The progressive mounted a strong primary challenge for the seat as Goldman, a Levi Strauss heir and a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, grappled with frustration over his longtime support from the pro-Israel lobby. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and House Democratic leadership supported Goldman.
The race became a referendum on competing visions for Democrats in New York, with Goldman pitching a more centrist, establishment platform and Lander championing the progressive wing.
Though Goldman, a Levi Strauss heir, won the primary for his second term by roughly 40 percentage points in 2024, an Emerson College Polling survey last month showed Lander up by more than 30 points in the 2026 primary.
