NEW YORK (NewsNation) — Luigi Mangione is scheduled Monday to appear in federal court in Manhattan for a pretrial hearing in the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione faces separate prosecutions by the state of New York and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Monday’s hearing is expected to focus on preparations for his federal trial, including plans for jury selection.

In a letter to the judge, attorneys said they are prepared to discuss proposed juror questionnaires, scheduling and any other issues the court wants to address.

Could media coverage impact jury bias?

Mangione’s defense has previously argued extensive media coverage could make it difficult to seat an impartial jury.

The district judge in Mangione’s federal case has also expressed concerns about having potential jurors complete questionnaires while Mangione’s state case is still pending.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the 2024 shooting death of Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk. He faces both state and federal charges and could receive life in prison if convicted.

His state trial is set to begin Sept. 8, while the federal trial is not expected until next year.

Mangione’s defense slams report of plea deal

Meanwhile, Mangione’s defense attorneys are pushing back against reports they were discussing a possible plea deal with federal prosecutors.

In a statement to NewsNation, Mangione’s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo said talks never took place.

“This information attributed to ‘anonymous sources’ is part of a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury,” she said.

Initial reports Thursday suggested the two parties were in discussions over a potential deal for his four federal charges but talks fell apart. Mangione was indicted on charges including interstate stalking, using a firearm during a crime of violence and discharging a firearm equipped with a silencer.
