Jeremychanphotography/Getty Images Global Citizen Festival will return to Central Park’s Great Lawn on Saturday, Sept. 26, with a full day of performances from Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, and Tomorrow x Together.
Hill and Jean will headline the free event with an anniversary celebration of the Fugees‘ second and final album, The Score. The instant classic record included their signature cover of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly,” alongside the singles “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La.” The Fugees celebrated the 25th anniversary of the album as a trio in 2021 with plans for an expansive tour that never quite happened. Since then, their third member, Pras Michel, has started a 14-year prison sentence on charges of money laundering, illegal lobbying, and campaign finance violations.
But the show will go on. This year, Global Citizen is hosting its annual New York festival as part of a campaign to help more children attend school, support farmers in feeding their communities, and provide electricity for millions of people globally. Hugh Jackman will host the event with additional appearances from Rachel Brosnahan and Gayle King.
“It’s time to gather once again on the Great Lawn, in the middle of New York City, to tell the world an end to extreme poverty is possible,” said Jackman in a statement. “There’s something every one of us can do to change the world, and what better way to participate than by taking action with Global Citizen, earning those points, and celebrating with a day of music and advocacy to close out the summer.”
