“Everyone thinks teenage relationships don’t last,” the voiceover of Netflix’s Heartstopper Forever trailer begins. “Guess I’m an optimist.”

Netflix is gearing up for the grand finale of the popular coming-of-age series with the debut of the trailer for Heartstopper Forever on Tuesday morning. The film serves as a conclusion to the beloved story.

Heartstopper Forever follows Kit Connor’s Nick and Joe Locke’s Charlie on the precipice of change and unable to imagine life without each other. The synopsis reads, “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them.”

In the trailer, Locke’s Charlie pleads with Connor’s Nick, telling the other boy he just wants him to be happy. “I’m only happy when I’m with you,” Nick says. Charlie tells Nick he doesn’t “think that’s how it should be” through tears.

“Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet,” the synopsis continues. “Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”

The trailer features Olivia Rodrigo’s latest single, “Stupid Song,” from the singer’s recently released You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love album.

William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Rhea Norwood and Leila Khan also star in the film.

Alice Oseman, who also wrote the graphic novel the series is based on, created and wrote the finale film. Wash Westmoreland directed the film, which was produced by See-Saw Films. Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Oseman, Euros Lyn, Locke and Connor executive produced.

Heartstopper Forever drops on Netflix on July 17. Watch the full trailer below.
