Bob Baffert earned that distinction when Silver Charm won the 1997 Derby, followed by Real Quiet in 1998. Now, Bill Mott gets that chance with Chief Wallabee, who is one of the favorites at 8-1. Mott trained last year's winner, Sovereignty, who won by 1 ½ lengths over Journalism.
Saturday's 2026 Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., will have a post time of 6:57 p.m. ET. Renegade enters as the 4-1 odds-on favorite, followed by Commandment and Further Ado at 6-1 and Chief Wallabee. Other favorites include The Puma at 10-1, and So Happy and Emerging Market, both at 15-1, while Fulleffort was the latest scratch, being replaced by Ocelli (50-1). One of Demling's surprising 2026 Kentucky Derby picks: He's completely fading Renegade, the morning-line favorite at 4-1. Renegade is coming off a win at the Arkansas Derby, but unfortunately for Renegade, success is not guaranteed at Churchill Downs despite the showing. In fact, only three other horses that won the Arkansas Derby have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby. American Pharoah in 2015 was the last horse to do so, while the other Arkansas Derby winners who went on to win at Churchill Downs were Sunny's Halo in 1983 and Smarty Jones in 2004. Demling also locked in his 2026 Kentucky Derby prediction for Commandment, who is the half-brother of Renegade and is listed at 6-1 in the Kentucky Derby odds. Commandment comes to Churchill Downs on a four-race winning streak, including winning back-to-back graded-stakes races: the Florida Derby and the Fountain of Youth Stakes.
