Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, lost his congressional bid on Tuesday for the open congressional seat in the heart of Manhattan to New York State Assemblyman Micah Lasher (D).
Schlossberg finished third in a crowded field of Democratic primary candidates, who were vying to succeed retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), who held the seat for more than 30 years.
Lasher — a former Nadler aide who held top positions under New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg — won with 39 percent of the vote in New York’s 12th Congressional District, according to DDHQ; fellow New York State Assembly member Alex Bores (D) followed with 35 percent of the vote; and Schlossberg followed with nearly 11 percent of the vote.
Schlossberg, 33, made a name for himself in the race as a social media savvy Millennial with strong name recognition. He holds a joint law and business degree and worked as a political journalist for Vogue Magazine.
Schlossberg addressed a watch party early Tuesday night to thank campaign workers and call for Democrats to back more responsive and inspiring candidates who “are willing to speak plainly about the cost of living, about corruption and fearlessly about the Constitution,” The Associated Press reported.
“We don’t just need younger candidates. We need different people,” Schlossberg said, adding, “unless Democrats learn from the signals that are being sent all across the country, we are going to keep on losing.”
Schlossberg was one of seven Democrats who lost on Tuesday, including former Republican attorney-turned Trump critic George Conway.
Lasher is well positioned to win the deep-blue district in November, when he will face Republican nominee Caroline Shinkle, who ran unopposed in the primary Tuesday.
