Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) on Sunday said she will undergo physical rehabilitation after she was injured in what Toledo, Ohio, first responders said was a hit-and-run crash.
Kaptur shared a video on the social platform X thanking “you so very, very much for the thousands of good wishes that are coming from our community, across our region, our state, our country and even around the world” toward her “rapid recovery.”
“We will not return to Washington until next month, so I’m blessed to have time to recover fully,” she said, referring to herself and her staff, including one staffer who was also injured in the crash.
In thanking the first responders, Kaptur described the crash as “not a pleasant experience, and there were wounds that resulted. But let me tell you, we have to be very grateful, in this region, to have the kind of dedicated medical staff that exists at Mercy St. Vincent [Medical Center].”
Kaptur concluded the video by sharing a card she received “from a young gentleman named Avery.” The card, written by a child, read on the front of it: “For Marcy Kaptur: Get well soon with Charlie.” Beside the words was a drawing of a brown dog that Kaptur said was Charlie.
“[Avery] and I happen to be friends and he was worried about me,” Kaptur said before reading the card. “So he did this card for me …These are wonderful people, and they uplift your spirits, and each of you uplift my spirit as we move forward.”
The 80-year-old congresswoman was a passenger in a vehicle heading to church service last Sunday when her car was struck, her office previously said. Toledo police learned of a “hit-skip” crash at around 10:48 a.m. EST in the area of Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue, Toledo Police Sgt. Mohamad Nasser previously told The Hill.
Ohio law treats a hit-skip the same as a hit-and-run, with both signifying the failure to stop after an accident.
Kaptur has served in Congress representing Ohio’s 9th Congressional District since 1983 and is actively seeking an 18th term this November, making her the longest-serving member of Ohio’s 17-member congressional delegation by more than 20 years.
