A federal judge on Monday ordered President Trump to turn over financial documents to BBC from his trust, supporting claims that a poor documentary edit caused monetary damages for the leader.
Judge Enjoliqué Aytch Lett granted BBC’s subpoena to review documents from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust dating back to Jan. 1, 2023.
Trump’s lawyers had argued in favor of using expert testimony to support their claim for damages amounting to $10 billion.
“The Court does, however, agree with the Trust that the Subpoena’s requests are overbroad as to the temporal scope and need to be limited,” Lett wrote in his order.
“Because the Documentary aired on October 28, 2024 (Compl. 2, n.1), documentation from the date of January 1, 2023, to the present should allow Defendant to determine Plaintiff’s financial position immediately before and after the documentary’s publication,” he added.
In November of last year, BBC apologized for stringing together three separate portions of a speech from Trump to make it look as if he encouraged a violent attack on the Capitol for an episode of its “Panorama” series titled “Trump: A Second Chance?”
“We accept that our edit unintentionally created the impression that we were showing a single continuous section of the speech, rather than excerpts from different points in the speech, and that this gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action,” the BBC wrote in a retraction, but refused to issue a payout for the mistake.
The network’s Director-General Tim Davie, along with news chief Deborah Turness also resigned over the error.
