Conservative commentator Scott Jennings says it “might be time” for President Trump to weigh in on Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio), an embattled lawmaker facing allegations of domestic violence.

CNN’s John Berman asked Jennings why Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) has been one of the few Republican lawmakers to call for Miller to resign, saying GOP members of Congress appear to be “treating this like a trick question.”

“Well, it‘s not a trick question, although none of those people individually are at the top of the party,” Jennings said. “They‘re members of the party, and I think their opinions matter. And certainly even President Trump, who is at the top of the party, has expressed, at least privately to Miller, his opinion about this.”

Berman interjected: “But certainly not publicly.”

“Not publicly yet,” Jennings continued. “It might be time to do it, to be honest. And maybe he will. And there‘s still a few days to go here, and we’ll see how this unfolds. I know he remains defiant. But it was hard to — sort of hard to look at the details and hard to watch that interview with Jake [Tapper] and walk away from that going, ‘Yeah, everything’s going to turn out fine.’ I think any reasonable person watching that knows that’s not the case.”

Trump praised Miller to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, calling him a “good person” and saying the allegations were “a very sad thing.”

“I mean, I always thought he was a very good person, and I’m going to let the families figure that out,” Trump said, adding that he knows the families “are working on it.”

Miller, who has denied the allegations and sued his ex-wife for defamation in May, said Tuesday he spoke with Trump on the phone and that the president was “supportive” as he told him that his reelection chances were growing slim.

A person familiar with the call previously told The Hill that Trump told Miller to drop out of the race.

Other Republican lawmakers, including Sens. Rick Scott (Fla.), Roger Marshall (Kan.) and Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), have called on Miller to resign. So has Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who said Miller, his former son-in-law, needs “serious psychological help” and that the two-year-long divorce proceedings between his daughter, Emily Moreno, and Miller were “pure hell” for the family.

Miller was defiant in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday, when he denied the allegations and addressed claims of illegal drug use. He touted polling in his race against Democratic House candidate Brian Poindexter and insisted that he is “never going to give up.”

“No one has told me to get off the ballot, and that’s because they know I can win this seat,” he told Tapper.
