Vision Films has acquired the Jeff Bridges narrated documentary “In the Company of Wolves: An American Journey,” directed by Susan Kucera. The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15 at the Olympia Theater.

After Cannes, the film will have a limited theatrical release in the U.S., and will be available via transactional video-on-demand from July 17.

Bridges, an Oscar winner with “Crazy Heart,” narrates the journey of wolves and other animals as co-travelers through American history. Bridges said, “It reminds us that the wild and the domesticated have always reflected the deeper story of who we are as a nation — and who we might yet become.”

Bridges is using his compensation from the film to support several conservation organizations, including The Vital Ground Foundation, a land trust that protects and connects wildlife habitat in the Northern Rocky Mountains.

The film is the third collaboration for Bridges and Kucera, whose credits include “Living in the Future’s Past,” “Breath of Life” and “Hot Money.”

Kucera said, “I think this film stands apart because it reframes the American mythos — moving beyond human ambition to the deeper relationships that shaped the land, and in turn, the nation itself.”

Lise Romanoff, CEO and managing director of Vision Films, said, “This film is a spectacular visual journey and a reminder of the need to respect and preserve our planet’s ecosystem.”

The film features commentary from members of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe and Crow Nation, leading historians and author Michelle Paver, whose “Wolf Brothers” series has sold over three million copies worldwide.

Other participants include science writer David Quammen (“Outside,” “National Geographic”), Jon Coleman of Notre Dame University, author of “Vicious: Wolves and Men in America,” Native American ecologist and author Cristina Eisenberg, Eastern Shoshone conservationist Jason Baldes (Intertribal Buffalo Council, Conservation Lands Foundation), and Cameron Krebs, fourth generation sheep rancher.

The original score is by Keefus Ciancia (“True Detective,” “Living in the Future’s Past”). The film is executive produced by Jim Swift (“Hot Money,” “Breath of Life,” “Living in Future’s Past”).
